Experience

Stephen's main research areas are renewable energy, energy storage, hydrogen energy and electricity networks. His past work has included optimisation of the operation of electricity networks with wind power and energy storage. This has included modelling the effect of a demand for hydrogen on the operation of the system, as well as operating the network in conjunction with the electricity market. His current research interests include dynamic modelling and control of wind power generators in conjunction with energy storage. This includes modelling of the wind turbine including its generator and associated power electronics with the aim of maximising the power generated by the system.

Role in SOLCER

Stephen's role in SOLCER is to provide knowledge and modelling of energy storage systems, with a specialty in hydrogen energy storage. This involves modelling and simulation of renewable hydrogen energy systems, such as stand-alone wind powered electrolysis and solar powered electrolysis. This includes modelling of control aspects of the system, such as maximum power point tracking of photovoltaic or wind generation systems. Along with this his role includes assisting in maintaining and operating the hydrogen storage related equipment at the University of South Wales’ Hydrogen research and demonstration centre.
